The 10 Commandments of Social Media

Image via Wikipedia

In life, in trying to do the right things, or at least knowing what’s right and what’s wrong, there are sets of rules or laws that we should pay attention to and abide. Millward Brown made a list of these rules in a post of Richard Meyer in his “10 Rules of Social Media” :

1. Don’t recreate your home page in social media: don’t rehash the same information people can get elsewhere.
2. Listen first, then talk: create a dialogue
3. Build trust by being open and honest: transparency is key.
4. Give your brand a face: give consumers someone or something accountable for the brand.

Are you going to implement social media in 2011?

Social Media Phobias
Image by Intersection Consulting via Flickr

Social media is all around us. Over 600 million people of all ages are now engaged on social media sites. Just take a look at the video “social media revolution 2” on YouTube. In the course of 2010, companies have realized that these channels represent a great way to reach out and engage customers.

Joining social media as a company might seem easy and is started with a lot of enthusiasm. However, success does not lie around the corner. The initial drive to create necessary profiles and posts leads to worries about lack of success, large investments in time and hard to measure Return-On-Investment.

So, before you start, it is always a good idea to stop and think about the following items:

* Awareness of social media: How well do you understand what social media really is? What different platforms are there out there and what are they used for? Which ones do you pick to be active on?

TIP: A great start is to get a good overview by reading up on the subject or even better calling on a specialist who can show you the way.

The Conversation will continue about social media in 2011

The debate and discussions about measuring social media, and those about social media ROI, often focus more on what can be measured than on the value that social media is creating for a brand. Over the last few years as brands have been experimenting with social media this is not unexpected. When we go through periods of innovation and experimentation we always tend to explore and discover the new tools we are using. But as social media has become more mainstream for brands, both as part of the marketing mix and more broadly across the business, we need to move from discussing the things we can measure to the things we should measure. From measurements to the actual value that social is adding to a brand.

Measuring and then evaluating the value that social is adding to a brand will be different from brand to brand. They are using social in different ways, across different parts of their business and are used to measuring value in different ways. There is not one solution, a panacea for all our social media measurement ills. Things are more complicated than that. However, this does not mean that we cannot measure the value we are having when we use social media. And as social media has moved from innovation and experimentation to more mainstream we need to take a more mainstream approach to value. And we need to talk about what we are measuring and the value social is creating.

I’m writing this write-up for those people who are regarded newbies in the field of Search engine optimization writing. You see, I was once inside your shoes. Back then, I was extremely desperate to discover in-depth facts as to how I can do the practice appropriate. Great thing there were people who were additional than pleased to assist me understand the whole course of action. Now, it’s payback time. Let me share with you the things I’ve learned in 5 years of writing my Seo articles. These are the following:

Work together with Seo specialists. One of probably the most crucial things that I’ve learned is that the requirements of main search engines (particularly Google) can change any minute and they do not make announcements about these changes. It’ll genuinely assist in the event you sustain an open communication with other Search engine optimization experts. Join them often on Search engine optimization blogs and forums. In here, they generally share what they’ve attempted and what worked when they’re pulling their page ranking. I am confident you will benefit from understanding what they know.

Explore new topics. Both search engines and online users don’t care about old topics. Why would they waste their time on some thing that they already know, anyway? When you wish to capture their attention, you greater give them a thing fresh. I recommend that you just explore new topics related to your niche. Its greater if you are the very first and the only one writing about these distinct topics because it will surely result in instant recognition.

How To Write Evergreen Content

cfap0444-st-johns-bridge-22

Evergreen content is content written with the goal of driving traffic to a website for a long period of time. In some cases, such as when the content is historical and will never change (something like the presidency of Zachary Taylor), the content can live for the life of the website with little or no updating. In other cases, the content may have a long lifespan but must be updated every few years. An example of this would be something like “year end tax strategies for seniors”, which changes every few years as the tax laws change.

When planning/writing evergreen content, do your keyword research first and make sure your page/post/url’s are very keyword centric (see Keep Your Articles Narrowly Focused and Keyword Centric). You want to avoid catchy, cute, and witty titles as they will almost always drive less traffic. Your evergreen content generally will fall into two categories: high level reference/resource/research oriented pieces or flagship content. It is possible for them to be both. Some examples of evergreen content are as follows:

* How to style posts like how to plan a kitchen
* Historical posts about people places or things like the TWA terminal at JFK airport
* Encyclopedic or reference style posts about things like saffron or 1955 Lincoln Futura
* Informational posts like airline luggage fees

13 Tips to Maximize Your Social Media Productivity

Logo for the Addicted to Social Media Blog
Image via Wikipedia

It’s pretty common knowledge that implementing an effective social media strategy takes time. That makes tips on how to maximize your social media productivity, such as those shared by Todd Schnick, co-founder of #Innochat, on his strategy for allocating your time very valuable. Todd’s recommendation was to divide your social media participation time into thirds, with 1/3 of your time within each category:

* Observing / listening in others’ social media outlets
* Participating in others’ outlets through commenting, guest blogging, etc.
* Creating content and being active within your own outlets

Ever since Todd shared that concept in early 2009, his social media productivity strategy has been front and center in my mind (and ensconced in my social media strategy presentations). The truth is I rarely come close to this balanced approach since creating Brainzooming content definitely represents the majority of my time.

One way of improving on your time allocation is by investing your effort in activities which contribute to more than one of these categories.
